Trillian is a chat client with a user interface that you can skin completely. It stands alone, is fully featured, works with AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC, and has abilities that are not available, or possible, on network based chat clients, such as doing global status changes, setting all of the networked machines at once. Trillian will not hijack your home page and has no insidious items. It will retain message history for each contact. It includes more emoticons that you thought even existed. It also has emotisounds. Trillian also allows file sharing and transfers by using shell extensions. You get alerts and notifications for those events you want to know about. You do this by configuring the alert / notification feature to whatever level and types of awareness you wish. You can be made aware of anything and everything that goes on as a part of the client.
